The three news clips that I viewed depicted a story of a girl who was kidnapped while hitchhiking. She was then held against her will and abused for seven years. Although she was clearly the victim the offender tried to depict her as agreeing consensually to the abuse committed to her. The first article hinted at this. The second article didn’t go into much detail on this and the third came right out and almost agreed with the offender while trying to remain unbiased. The first article portrays the victim as helpless the second article doesn’t portray her as helpless but doesn’t give her the picture of strong willed either. The last article blatantly makes it seem as though the victim was at fault for her being victimized. The costs of this victim are seven years of her life and her mental and physical health from being abused. California the state the victim is from does have a victim’s compensation fund but I don’t believe any amount of money could be justification for compensating for the crime committed. But if the victim asked for it, it could be made available. Restorative justice may also be used but in my opinion a retributive model would be more appropriate. I believe this is a heinous crime and should be treated as such the offender is looking at 101 year and rightfully so justice was served in this case.
